2014 Josh Gray (JUCO)
LNH notes: (8/12/13) Josh left Texas Tech shortly after Tubby Smith’s April arrival in Lubbock. Now, @JucoRecruiting says Minnesota and new head coach Richard Pitino are the latest to offer the point guard. He’ll be a sophomore at Odessa College (Texas) for the 2013-14 year and should then be eligible to compete for two more years of D-I basketball.
A bit small, but very quick and able to create for himself or others. Gray was a volume shooter as a freshman (~26% %Shots), but made only 19% of his 3FGA’s (15/80). He converted his 2FGA’s at a better rate – 43% on 91 of 212 – but all attempts considered his eFG% was a very low 38.9%. He can be a lot better.
Assist rate of and turnover rate both hovered around 26.5% and looking forward a year he could be a guy that projects to be more around 28% and 20% as a junior.
In addition, Gray’s steal percentage of 4.3% put him in the top 10 of all high major players.
There have been some off the court issues, he’s been a bit nomadic (HS & college) and it wasn’t a great overall freshman year for Gray, but there is absolutely talent here. Quick, confident point guard who can hurt the opposition when he’s dribbling and when they are dribbling. (end 8/12/13 notes)
+ Committed to and from Mississippi State a couple of times, but a coaching change there ultimately led him to Texas Tech.
+ This past season (2012-13) as a freshman with the Red Raiders, Billy Gillespie left weeks before the team even played their first game. After going through the year with an interim head coach, Tubby Smith was hired to lead the program in early April. Gray left a couple of weeks after the Smith hire.
+ Ranked #107 in the 2012 class by Rivals.
+ LNH has seen in person.
