February 14, 2013 – Minnesota / Big Ten Basketball Recruiting – Tyler Ulis
The Minnesota Golden Gophers travel to Iowa for a game Sunday afternoon, February 17. Tyler Ulis, a 2014 point guard from Chicagoland, is expected to attend and has fielded interest from both the Hawkeyes and the Gophers.
The junior guard is a true point that can handle the ball and dish it, but he’s proven to be a potent scorer as well.
The question for some on Ulis has been his size. You’ll see him listed at a range of different heights, but around 5’8″ is probably fair. Despite being undersized, the number of his doubters has dwindled as his excellent play can’t be ignored.
Ulis has led his Marian Catholic High School team to a 23-3 record and the junior guard now has strong interest from a number of impressive schools.
Does this have anything to do with Minnesota and Tyus Jones? No. The Gophers are simply interested in a very good basketball player.
Michigan State’s Tom Izzo, a frequent visitor to Minnesota high schools and a coach in hot pursuit of Jones, watched Ulis recently.
Ulis lived in Ohio, but has been in Chicago since he began high school. In Ohio he would practice against his cousin, former Michigan State guard and defensive specialist Travis Walton.
One of the Spartans’ wins this season (the Marian Spartans) came against 2013 Gopher commit Alex Foster’s Seton Academy, 61-52.
Ulis, Foster and Alex Ellis, another 2013 Gopher commit, are all very familiar with each other and played together with Meanstreets in the Nike EYBL.
Could Minnesota’s 2014-15 include a trio of Meanstreets alumni? It looks possible and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Ulis visit Minnesota before he makes a decision on where to attend college.
