EYBL 2015 Session 2: Howard Pulley Advanced Stats

Howard Pulley finished this weekend’s session with a 74-70 victory over Boo Williams. Pulley (3-5) had started the session with three losses, but an impressive 13 point, 12 rebound performance by 2016 center Brock Bertram helped propel the Panthers to the win.

A look at the four factors over the weekend highlights the issues:

Eff. eFG% TO% OR% FTR
Pulley 108.26 49.8% 18.7% 38.2% 31.2%
Opp 118.57 53.0% 15.8% 38.2% 45.2%

The opponents bested Pulley in each of the four factors except for rebounding (which was even). Foul trouble was an issue throughout the session (83 fouls called on HP; 58 on opponents).  2017 big man Theo John played only 41% of the team’s minutes as he was saddled with foul trouble (11.5 fouls called per 40 minutes).

The table below includes various data, including ORtg and usage, and is sorted by ORtg:

#24, C Marble 43.8% 63.8 8.8% 9.3% 5.6%

Obviously a big weekend offensively for 2017 Gary Trent ,Jr., but even a 36-point game (including 8/12 3FG, a 93.3% eFG%, and 8/9 FT) against Team Texas Elite wasn’t enough to get the win.

Trent’s session 1 comparables to session 2 included: 109. ORtg, 31.9% %Poss and 46.9% eFG%. His session 2 free throw rate improved to 35% from 23% in the first four games of the season.

Brock Bertram saw added playing time with John’s foul troubles and responded as we expect – scoring when opportunity arises, not turning the ball over (1 turnover in 86 minutes; turnover rate of 3.9%) and very good rebounding (12.5% OR; 22.7% DR).

2016 guard Amar Miller posted a solid ORtg with a 25% usage thanks to strong shooting (59.5% eFG%) and a 29.4% assist rate. His turnover rate of 31.0% offset some of the positives, but was lower than 34.8% in session 1.

Cameron Kirksey, a versatile 2016 switchable, didn’t see a ton of time but as we’ve come to expect he did get his swats in. Cam blocked 5 shots in 40 minutes, good for an 11.7% block%.

The pace of play quickened in session 2, with possessions per game for Pulley rising to 63 from 58 in session 1.

Session 3 is in two weeks and they have a good shot to grab 3 of 4 there in Houston. That would set up for some very meaningful games in Maple Grove, MN over Memorial Day weekend to determine who’s in and who’s out for the Peach Jam.
