Ask LNH: Is Tyus Jones Overrated?

Ask LNH: Is Tyus Jones Overrated?

No. If anything, the 2014 RSCI #7 Jones is underrated.

His feel and understanding of the game of basketball is truly special and nothing short of remarkable. You’ll often see him described as a “pass first point guard” along with a comment about his relative lack of athleticism. The “pass first” description is fine, but make no mistake – Tyus Jones can put points on the board with the best of them and will get flat out nasty scoring the ball when he needs to.

College basketball fans across the country will say, “Wow, I didn’t know Jones could do THAT” this year.

Gophers Add 6’9″ F Gaston Louis Diedhiou to 2014 Class

Gophers Add 6’9″ F Gaston Louis Diedhiou to 2014 Class
April 11, 2014

Reports this afternoon are that 2014 Gaston Diedhiou has committed to play for the Minnesota Golden Gophers. Diedhiou, age 20, is from Dakar, Senegal, which has produced a lot of basketball talent over the years.

Having spent years in Spain, Diedhiou played for Canarias Basketball Academy (“CBA”) two years ago. The 6’9″, 225+ pound forward saw action on the east coast at the 2013 National Prep School Invitational (NPSI), but didn’t leave much of an impression.

He’s tall, long, athletic for his size and has some upside, but at this point is a project.  With the roster and calendar as they both currently sit, a calculated risk is warranted at this point for the Gophers. The desire would be that Diedhiou becomes a good rebounder that can defend well with his size and athletic abilities.

Based on his background, we’d hope amateurism issues wouldn’t cause a delay in his first appearance on the court, but it’s difficult to tell what the NCAA might do on any given day. The CBA has sent a lot of talent to U.S. colleges over the past several years and the Academy operates in conjunction with Oakley College, an academic institution on the Canary Islands.

The CBA and Oakley are well known in the college basketball world and Minnesota fans have seen many alums this past season, most recently 10 days ago when the Gophers played Florida State at Madison Square Garden (7’2″ Boris Bojanovsky).

There are some CBA ‘highlight videos’ out there of Gaston, but we’ll point you to a couple of real game-day game clips.

Overall, is this a “stretch”? Sure, but if things go well Pitino and staff will be able to point to “the Diedhiou success story.”

In the first two videos below, Gaston is #44 in orange. This game against Bridgton Academy (ME) was a 60-468 loss.

…and finally – below is game footage of CBA vs. former Gopher target Goodluck Okonoboh… #44 in black is Gaston Diedhiou… he only lasts 24 seconds in this clip after being called for an offensive foul while being guarded by Okonoboh

6’6″ Wing

LNH Notes: First, it’s important to recognize the relationships in this recruitment.  Louisville’s Rick Pitino will bring in another Seattle player this summer and has drawn on the talent at Piper’s high school before.

This summer, Rick Pitino will do so again when Piper’s Rainier Beach teammate Shaqquan Aaron joins the Cardinals.

The Minnesota Golden Gophers and coach Richard Pitino added a third player to the 2014 recruiting class when Carlos Morris committed this morning.

Morris is a 6’5″ wing who can play and defend multiple positions. The Florida native was a South Carolina commit and borderline top 100 player in high school.

During his freshman season at Chipola College (Fla.) Morris averaged more than 13 points per game and shot 52.1% eFG (51.2% 2FG, 35.6% 3FG, 44.6% 3FGA/FGA).

Carlos is expected to have two years of competition eligibility available when he arrives in the Twin Cities next summer. With added strength and experience he is potentially an impact player for the Gophers in 2014-15. His size and skill is a good fit for Pitino’s desired style of play on both sides of the ball.

LNH Insights: 2014 Gopher Commit Nate Mason

LNH Insights: 2014 Gopher Commit Nate Mason
October 25, 2013

In mid-July we added the following notes to Nate Mason’s recruiting page: “Combo guard who may do quite well as a point guard in college. Small, but can be tough and assertive. Sometimes looks great, sometimes not so great – certainly a player we could see sneaking up Minnesota’s list of 2014 targets.”

Indeed, the 6-foot tall Mason rose up the list of Minnesota’s targets, but fans shouldn’t consider him a consolation prize – he’s a very good talent.

Following are some additional thoughts and insights on Mason, who joins forward Josh Martin in Richard Pitino’s 2014 recruiting class.

2014 Adonys Henriquez

2014 Adonys Henriquez
6’7″ Wing

LNH Notes: Henriquez is a versatile wing who can contribute both scoring and passing the ball. He decommitted from Miami (Fla.) last month (originally committed last December) and Minnesota is now involved. Known as a wing who can attack and finish around the basket in a number of ways, he possesses good size and could play at the 2 or 3 and defend multiple positions for a team like the Gophers.

2014 Lamonte Bearden

2014 Lamonte Bearden
6’2″ Point Guard

9/10/13 – Committed to Buffalo.

LNH Notes: (8/13/13) Bearden is a versatile point guard with room to further develop. Minnesota is now showing strong interest and we actually like how he projects more so than some of the other point and combo guards the Gophers are looking at.

He’s got some speed and athleticism and is capable of being a very good outside shooter who can also drive into the lane. Nice pick and roll game and overall passing ability is strong; good length. Generates a lot of steals on defense. His handles are pretty and his turnover rate should continue to fall with age and experience.
