Pitino’s Former PF Excelling at West Virginia

Upon Minnesota’s hiring of Richard Pitino we wrote COULD RICHARD PITINO BRING A STAR FORWARD TO MINNESOTA? (April 3, 2013). The article discussed FIU-bound Jonathan Holton and his JUCO teammate Kevin Thomas, noting that, “[p]ower forward is a position of need for next year’s team and Pitino could potentially deliver in a major way.”

Recruiting: When the Local Star Doesn’t Stay Home

When the Local Star Doesn’t Stay Home

Minnesota’s “Big Three” of Tyus Jones, Rashad Vaughn and Reid Travis are among the dwindling list of uncommitted stars from the 2014 recruiting class. Staying in the Twin Cities and playing for the hometown Gophers remains a possibility for each of them although most people believe only Travis is strongly considering Minnesota. He plans to announce his decision this Friday.

When a recruit’s commitment isn’t in agreement with a fan’s desire, responses from the fan often range from disappointed to disrespectful. This is true across many fan bases.

To be disappointed is understandable. To be disrespectful is disgraceful. Fortunately most kids and their supporters aren’t going to be overly bothered by numskulls who act a fool.

Freedom of speech is a wonderful thing and everyone has a right to say what they would like to. With that said, I’ll offer a few thoughts from my perspective.

Minnesota Recruiting Pages and Thoughts – 7/21/13

An exceptional incoming class of 2014 would certainly mean a boost to Minnesota basketball, but where things are at in years 4 and 5 is much more important to the program and brand than what happens in year 1. Excitement is good, but patience is a virtue.

Recruiting: 2015 PG Jarvis Johnson

Marquette University’s Buzz Williams was one of many coaches watching Howard Pulley beat the Travelers 90-78 in Peach Jam play this morning.

Playing alongside 2014 phenom Tyus Jones, rising junior guard Jarvis Johnson (DeLaSalle HS, Minneapolis, Minn.) took on a scoring role with 22 points on 7/11 shooting and didn’t turn the ball over in 28 minutes played. Johnson knocked down 4 of his 5 3-point attempts, bringing his effective field goal percent for the game to 81.8%.

The Pitch
Minnesota’s new head coach Richard Pitino can offer something to 2014 recruiting targets that many other schools, including the Duke Blue Devils, cannot.

The Minnesota high school class of 2014 features the “Big Three” of Tyus Jones, Rashad Vaughn and Reid Travis. In addition to pursuing those players, Richard Pitino won’t shy away from head-to-head recruiting battles with traditional basketball powerhouses.
