Greg Elliott Posting Impressive Defensive Stats Early for Marquette
With the departure of Haanif Cheatham earlier this week, Marquette freshman Greg Elliott may need to play a bigger role than he otherwise would have. This may be a good thing.
Elliott (41.4% minutes played) has a block rate of 8.4% and a steal rate of 4.3%, both ranked in the top 70 players nationally per KenPom.com.
To maintain such lofty percentages throughout the year would be difficult, but 6’3” guard’s length and instincts have been evident to the eye and the numbers are confirming it.
Per BartTorvik.com, there have been only three players (minimum 40% of team’s minutes played) who posted a block rate of 8% or more and a steal rate of 4% or more in a season over the past 10 years. None of those players did so prior to their junior year and all are at least 6’7”.
The three players referred to above are:
Damian Johnson, Minnesota (twice)
Haminn Quantance, Kent St.
Damian Saunders, Duquense (who was also a former Marquette commit)
